The Spirituality Instinct

Why read The Atheist’s Guide to Religion?

In a recent TV series, (Enemies of Reason) Richard Dawkins decries the huge growth in new age spirituality. Astrology columns adorn almost every newspaper. Millions patronise Tarot readers, while others attend seances for news of departed loved ones. Dawkins sees this trend as an attack on rationality and science.

I suggest it has more to do with people turning away from organised religion. Spirituality is an instinctive human need, stronger in some people than in others. If religion fails to fulfill it, people will look elsewhere. Disaffection with organised religion is spreading, hence the growth in new age spirituality.

The real problem is that these people are turning in the wrong direction. It is not easy to kick over the traces of organised religion, but the spirituality instinct can be appeased without resorting to charlatans. Less spiritual people may find it easier to renounce religion, but they still need to realise that it is not enough to simply discard it. It must be replaced with something more positive.

The Atheist’s Guide examines the history of religion, from the dawn of humanity through to the modern day power structures which hold the bulk of humanity in its thrall. It's all here- the history, the drama and the humour. Humour? Yes, because what could be funnier than religion? This book aims to be entertaining, as well as informative.

From Plato and Aristotle to Sigmund Freud, get expert advice on how to live a happy life. All in an easy to read package that takes into account the limitations that our evolutionary heritage have placed on us all. Turn an evolutionary burden into a positive force.

The Atheist’s Guide shows you how to get in tune with your spirituality instinct, without introducing any sour religious notes!
